Now For the Challenge ~ August Art Bead Scene Challenge

 

 

 

I look forward to this challenge every month. It is always a painting or photo that makes me really think outside my normal creating. Its not the flowers and butterflies I'm used to. I like that. I of course love to always make my entry out of Polymer Clay. It is not require. It is not required that you even make any of the beads in your piece. I however really like the idea of creating and designing my own piece. Every artist sees something different in every Painting. I always see a clay creation. Clay on the brain maybe but I just love that its so versatile that you can make a canvas of whatever your heart desires.

 

Another thing I enjoy about this challenge is there really never is a real winner or looser. I mean yes you do win amazing prizes if you are randomly chosen. Which is wonderful and the prizes are always amazing. The artist that wins the prize is randomly chosen and The Blog Writer Picks His or Her favorites or I should say she picks pieces that speak to her. She blogs about those artists and their entry. I feel that is more of a win and I am always honored when and if I'm mentioned. Its more of a challenge of the mind and what your eyes see that others don't. It is for fun and that makes it very interesting to me.

 

In these challenges you create or use an art bead as your focal piece that you feel inspires you and represents the painting, the hues in the painting or how you feel about the painting. Its a fun way to design a piece.

About the Art

Few of Homer's watercolors rival this one for its effects of shimmering sunlight and steamy atmosphere, achieved through the rapid application of wet-on-wet surfaces, the broad and dexterous exploitation of the white paper reserve, and the judicious sponging of wet pigment, especially in the shadows, reflecting light off the water. This picture is also exceptional for the number and visibility of its pencil marks, not only to indicate some of the boats' rigging (and betraying the pentimento of a sloop in the background that the artist edited out), but also to enliven the rustle of the sailcloth lifted by a phantom breeze. By contrast, Homer, in masterly fashion, merely daubed in the figures freehand, sacrificing nothing of their form and weight—they even seem to speak.

About the Artist
Winslow Homer (February 24, 1836 – September 29, 1910) was an American landscape painter and printmaker, best known for his marine subjects. He is considered one of the foremost painters in 19th century America and a preeminent figure in American art.
Largely self-taught, Homer began his career working as a commercial illustrator. He subsequently took up oil painting and produced major studio works characterized by the weight and density he exploited from the medium. He also worked extensively in watercolor, creating a fluid and prolific oeuvre, primarily chronicling his working vacations.

So I see the Painting I automatically think Water. So I grab my blue Premo Clay and My Penni Jo's Clay Tools and I get to work. Start mixing colors and drew up a photo of what I wanted to design and had a wonderful couple of hours of clay time.

About my Entry

This photo was very inspiring. We as a family love boating. We go out on our boat all summer.

 

 Not a lovely sailboat but boats are fun, wonderful and relaxing no matter the type.

 

So I enjoyed this challenge.

 

We had just been out on the water so I could close my eyes,

 

feel and smell the fresh air and the movement in the water.

 

I incorporated that into my work.  The Colors Just seemed to flow.

 

I happily kept working on my canvas enjoying my memories of boating.

 

Thinking of the water and being on the boat in my mind

 

and with my clay I was able to use my clay base of blue as a canvas.

 

Add bits of color where I wanted it or where it was needed.

 

 I loved creating my art bead to look like the painting.

 

Or my mini version of the painting.

 

I enjoyed adding the touches of white that is a reflection of the boat.

 

The dark clouds moving in looked so real, Ive seen those clouds before.

 

Its like you can just feel the wind in this photo as if your there.

 

Making the boat and the dingy and the sails. So many fun details in this painting.

 

With my clay I can make everything three dimensional.

 

 Which is fun when adding details like a flowing red flag.

 

The play of colors in this painting are dark and stormy but beautiful at the same time.

 

 The blues, greens, red, darker greys and silvers.

 

This was a beautiful color palate to play with.

 

 I knew this would be a larger piece so I wanted to create a long necklace.

 

 So I added it to a longer chain that wraps around and attaches at the side.

 

Added a fun little clasp that is like a miniature version of a clasp

 

 you would put on a rope on a boat.

 

Added a few clay rope beads, tying clay is not easy. But a fun lesson.

 

 Played with some blue colors to make waves of blues with some white accents. 

 

They make me think of the swirl of waves behind the boats. 

 

Tied it all together with a pretty double silver chain and some filigree round beads.

 

 I like the piece. I would be a fun conversation piece if you had a day of boating with friends.

 

 Throw it over a warm sweater while boating &let it sway with the waves.
